hen I got my first bottle of oil I ordered it online from some crazy site and paid WAY too much for it (like Retail + more!) I didn’t know what to do with it and I read something about using a diffuser. A diffuser? I had already paid a lot of money for this teeny, tiny, little bottle! But the little voice inside my head said “Keep going Kel! This is going to work!” What I didn’t do is listen to the other voice in my head, that said start slow. Note: I don’t usually listen to this one. So, I took the lid off and DuMPed half a bottle on a humidifier filter and went to bed… Go BIG! Right?!? When I woke up I was feeling something, but not sure if I liked it? I took, my wee little 6 month old (at the time) Little Man downstairs, and slept on the couch, just in case (insert crying and praying here). In the morning I can tell you that without a doubt the Thieves Oil supported our immune and respiratory systems. The next day I went to a class (so many learning resources out there) and found out I only really needed a couple drops of this MAGIC Thieves Oil? What! Only a few drops and it will still work?!? Over the next few days, weeks, months, years I have a million questions about the oils; I still don’t know it all! Keep going… you’ll get your questions answered! Just like me, we all need to start somewhere, but don’t be intimidated. Jump in and you won’t regret it!
How do I use Essential Oils?
First let’s get this out in the open, when we talk about using essential oils, I’m only talking about and using Young Living Brand Essential Oils (come on over and check my cupboards). Yes, there are some cheaper brands out there (just about every grocery store and company carries them now), but I would never use them on or around my family and I would never ingest them! With that being said they are something that I need to use responsibly so I’m going to keep out of reach of my Littles and my pets. Second let’s get this out of the way: I’m no doctor (captain obvious, right?) and I’m not going to be doing any diagnose, treating or curing. So if you are under a doctor’s care or on medications, nursing and pregnant please run this by them and see if it is OK for you, before you start.
Now that all that fun stuff is out of the way we can get on to the good stuff!
There are 3 ways to use your oils: Diffuse, use on your Skin or Ingesting your Young Living Essential Oils.
1. Diffusing – Breathe them in People!
What is a Diffuser? It’s OK I had the same question when I started. It’s a little contraption that you add water (about 1/4 cup) and a few drops (2-5) of your Young Living Essential Oils to, plug it in and it throws a mist into the air. When you diffusing Young Living Essential oils, you are inhaling and processing them directly through the olfactory system, which then sends therapeutic benefits of the oils to the brain. A diffuser will take an essential oils, break it down into micro molecules and project them into the air (again a mist). If you search online there are some amazing personal accounts of the benefits people receive while diffusing. Studies have shown that when diffusing certain oils you may experience relaxation, alertness, motivation…the list goes on.
Do I recommend a Diffuser? Yes, I love my diffuser and will never go back to using the humidifier ever again! The diffuser I recommend is the Dewdrop diffuser pictured here. When you purchase the Premium Starter Kit you get this diffuser for FREE! Yes, it’s a heck of a
deal steal! Retail is $80 and Wholesale is $63 so I need to get me one of those kits!
Other ways to benefit from simply smelling Young Living Essential Oils:
- Smell the cap
- Smell the bottle (take the lid off first)
- Put some on a cotton ball and put it in your pocket, purse or shoes
- Put a drop or two on a leather bracelet
- Make a spray and put it by the toilet, diaper pail or kitty litter
2. Skin Use – Topically
I have used Young Living Essential Oils on me, hubby, the littles and with the cats including, but not limited to: crown of our head, temples, cheeks, ears, neck, shoulders, back, chest, stomach, arms, legs, and bottoms of feet (there is a cool chart that explains this). This is also a good way to use the oil if it is not your favorite smell; put the oils on the bottom of your feet and socks on before you got to bed. I think you get the idea, right?
Sometimes you want to dilute or mix your oil with a carrier oil, because some are hotter, like Thieves. The essential oil labels will give you directions on how to dilute and if you can use them neat. “Neat” does not mean don’t spill, or if you live in Minnesota “FUN!” (what I thought for over a year), it means straight, or undiluted. See you are getting the hang of the oily lingo already!
What is a carrier oil? Here you have options, your looking for a pure oil, with no chemicals, that will dilute your essential oil. Young Living’s V-6 works great or sometimes I use coconut or olive oil. How do I do this? I can make a cool roller bottle or most of the time I will simply mix in my hand and just a few drops of each carrier and essential oil, in my palm, rub together then apply. I caution you, before you go mixing lotion with your essential oils, make sure you read the label and stay away from anything with bad stuff (chemicals). Why? You may have a reaction to the chemicals in the beauty product; remember the essential oils from Young Living have no chemicals! Also make sure to rotate your oils that you use often to avoid sensitization and irritation.
Remember to start slow, always use the oils diluted first and do a skin test. But if you do get in a spot and put an oil on that is too hot, simply put a carrier oil on over it. Don’t use water it will make the essential oil stronger; kind of like when you are cutting hot peppers. Go for the fat to dilute! Also keep the oils out of your eyes, ears and privates! Enough said.
3. Ingesting – Say, What?!? Your eating and drinking them?!?
Yes, we do! But again only our Young Living brand Essential Oils!
*Not all oils are good for ingesting, even when you are using Young Living, so READ your bottle to see if you can ingest and how much to ingest* And if you are allergic to the food or plant don’t use the oil or supplement that contains what you are allergic to.
We put them in water, but when adding them to water make sure you are not using plastic. Plastic has the “bad stuff” again that the oils go after. Use glass or stainless steel. I make sure I’m not without Lemon (just 2 drops to my glass) at a restaurant and the water does not taste so much like dirt anymore (you know what I’m talking about). Hubby loves to add oils to his cranberry or apple juice at night. I drink Thieves Oil in my water daily to support my immune system. You will only need a drop or two, trust me!
You can purchase vegetable capsules from Young Living and make your own pills to ingest; adding drops of essential oil and carrier oil. How do I know what oils to put in capsules? I look recipes up or just try something new. This is super easy and I do this daily. I also take prepackaged vitamins and supplements that have the oils in them, Awesome!
It is super fun to see how you can use the essential oils when your cooking. I have some tried and true recipes to our home on if you dig around. An easy add of essential oils would be adding a few drops of peppermint when making chocolate brownies (3-4 drops for a box) or cinnamon bark when making pancakes (2-3 drops), again it will not take much!
